Health Effect

One way that an adverse health effect can occur, is when a person or population is exposed to a toxic organism or chemical. For example, exposure to smoke, or fumes from a “combustible” gas appliance or equipment, like a power generator or car exhaust can result in carbon monoxide poisoning, or even death. Some adverse health effects, like the one just mentioned, can have quick, noticeable harmful results as a result of exposure. Other adverse health effects, like certain cancers, may take years or even decades to manifest as a result to chemical exposure. Although there have been tremendous advances made in scientific research, uncertainties still exist between certain environmental exposures and health effects. Nevertheless, researchers are increasingly making progress towards demonstrating excess risks among individuals and/or populations with certain environmental chemical exposures.
