Environmental Exposures

The environment plays an important role in health and human development. Over the last fifty years, researchers have made significant progress linking certain exposures to environmental hazards, with specific disease outcomes. One example is the link between exposure to asbestos and lung cancer. Another example is the link between exposure to lead and the decreased mental function of children. Although much progress has been made, there is still much work to be done. For example, other links remain unproven, such as the suspected link between bladder cancer and exposure to disinfectant byproducts in drinking water.
