Studies have shown that housing plays is an important role as a determinant for health. For example, in many areas across the country, homes built before 1978 are more likely to contain lead based paint and therefore be at increased risk for young children. The housing indicators use the US Census Bureau data to help identify the number of housing units and the areas where older homes may be located.
